Columbus, GA to Savannah, GA

Friday was a travel day from Columbus to Savannah. On the trip, we planned on stopping in Fort Valley. Do you know what they produce in Fort Valley besides the “Best Peaches in the Country”? How about a hint? “Blue Bird?” Give up? This item is in nearly every city in the USA. They build School Buses! They started building school buses in 1927, over 500,000 have been built and 180,000 are still in service. We went to the plant hoping to get a tour, but security was so tight and we didn’t get pass the parking lot. Oh well, we tried. So we drove on the outskirts of Savannah. We are at Camp Cracker Barrel along with 11 other RV’s This the largest number of overnighters we’ve ever witnessed!

Savannah is blooming

A beautiful sunny day to explore downtown Savannah! If you didn’t know, Savannah has 24 City Parks or Squares. The Squares are filled with giant Oak trees, with hanging Spanish Moss. The grounds are also filled with rich grass, flowers, shrubs not to mention water fountains and statues. It is a unique town! Streets have a lot of one ways, plus many are boulevards, and large green spaces between lanes. The squares were filled with tourist and locals.

Pretty elegant picnic in the park!

Don’t you love green spaces!

Blossoms coming in all directions!

Another thing noticed was the many grand Churches of every denominations. We settled on Sacred Heart Catholic Church, mainly because it had off street parking. There was a large congregation for Saturday Vigil.

Helen wanted a photo of the inside. Note: The church was full, but we arrived early for the photo shoot!

This is another church, a famous church choir director/composer belonged to this congregation! Read the next photo caption below!

Yes “Jingle Bellswas composed by this choir director!

On this evening we are at the same Cracker Barrel. All of the local campgrounds were full. The military campground at Hunter Army Airfield will not give you a site without advance reservations.

Here is a good unforeseen surprise for us. We drove down to the Lotts Island campground (The military one) The camp host didn’t have a site but said we could use the dump station and (This is a big one) we could go over to the overflow site, about 200 yards down the road. He also said drinking water was available there. That’s all we needed! With our own Honda generator, we had everything plus a whole overflow campground to ourselves. Well there was one tent camper that we never saw the occupant and one tag-a-along trailer that was parked with no vehicle around to pull it. So here we are with these large Pine trees, a gorgeous sunset and life boon docking at its best!

Isn’t this a perfect setting for “Boon docking” Lotts Island ~ Hunter Army Airfield

That’s what we saw and did!
